Polka Dots & Style: My Self-Drafted Coral Skirt

Polka Dots & Style: My Self-Drafted Coral Skirt

There’s something endlessly fun and timeless about polka dots. When I stumbled upon this vibrant coral-on-white polka dot fabric, I knew it was to become the perfect statement piece in my wardrobe. What better way to showcase it than by creating a custom-made skirt?

For this project, I decided to self-draft the pattern, giving me complete control over the design. The skirt is high-waisted, which creates a flattering silhouette and makes it easy to pair with a variety of tops. I opted for a gathered style that adds just the right amount of volume without being overwhelming. And, of course, I included pockets—because who doesn’t love a skirt with pockets?

Falling just below the knee, the length is perfect for a polished yet playful look. The skirt is fully lined, ensuring comfort and a smooth finish, with the lining fabric sourced from my local Joann Fabrics.

The fabric for this skirt was a delightful find from Promenade Fabrics in New Orleans. The coral polka dots pop beautifully against the crisp white background, creating a fresh and cheerful aesthetic. The fabric itself is lightweight and has a lovely drape, making it ideal for a gathered skirt.

When it came time to style this skirt, I wanted to lean into its playful vibe. I paired it with an orange collared shirt that I’ve had for years from JCPenney. The shirt’s vibrant color complements the coral polka dots perfectly, creating a cohesive and eye-catching ensemble.

For footwear, I chose cream gladiator-style sandals that feature a buckle on the side and a zipper in the back. These sandals are a favorite of mine—they add a bit of edge to the outfit while keeping it casual and comfortable.

This polka dot skirt has quickly become a favorite in my wardrobe. It’s versatile, stylish, and, most importantly, a reflection of my creativity and love for sewing. The combination of a self-drafted pattern and carefully selected fabrics has resulted in a piece that feels uniquely mine.

Whether I’m dressing it up with a blouse and heels or keeping it casual with a tee and flats, this skirt is sure to be a go-to for many seasons to come. If you’re thinking of making your own custom skirt, I highly recommend experimenting with fun patterns and bright colors—you’ll end up with a piece that’s as fun to wear as it was to make!
