I made a quilt coat!

Hey y'all,

Quilt Coat

I love sewing! I believe the best piece of clothing you can have is a made to measure garment that expresses your personality. I first learned the idea of quilt coats at the end of last year and have had in the back of my mind to make one. I also want to make a quilt bomber jacket, but I'll save that for another time.

First, I thought to draft my own pattern. Since outerwear isn't my specialty, I eventually realized the best option was to find a pattern that had most of the features I wanted and make a few alterations to make it my own.

Materials I used:

-1 king size quilt found here https://amzn.to/3YoaWtG

-Pattern found here https://amzn.to/3FVY86N

-Scissors

-Pins

-Thread

-Sewing Machine

Here were the specs I wanted

-Hood

-Pockets

-Past the knee

-Tie Waist

-Possibly cuffed sleeves

The perfect pattern base that checked most of those boxes? New Look #6585. Here is the pattern layout.

Alterations I made to the pattern:

-Lengthened the sleeves by 4"

-Added 2 belt loops

-Added a 2.5" wide tie sash

I positioned the belt loops stating 17 inches from the shoulder. To find the right length for the sash use this formula:

waist measurement +(length from waist to hem x 2)=sash length

I used a King Size Quilt I ordered from an Etsy shop in India.

I like that I didn't have to add anything to the length, it's the perfect tall girl size and the fit is loose and comfy. The pattern has the option for inset or exterior pockets.

It took me 6-8 hours to complete this coat. I didn't line it and did French seams. I do accept commissions.
